Massage
is an ancient art and a modern skill. It is touch but it seems less appropriate
as we grow older as a result of social convention, but we have all experienced
some forms of massage, such as a baby being cradled by your mother, comforting
a friend with a hug. Unfortunately we have moved into an age where touch
starvation, or tactile deprivation, is all too common.
"Massage is both a scientific skill and a form of acceptable structured touching, a potent form of inter-personal communication that can express a tangible act of physical and emotional caring." (Clive Chabrier)
Most people only think of having a massage in response to general aches and pains or muscle spasms but massage can have more specific uses such as serving to maintain the body in optimum working order or preparing people for intense activity such as sports or dance.
It is generally agreed that massage, even in its most basic application, relaxes the body, giving it respite from its daily stresses and strains as it calms the nerves, improves the blood circulation, encourages lymph movement and gently stretches muscles, so stimulating the body to remove its own waste products. This helps the body to marshal its own healing resources and helps to restore balance.
Many
massage therapists today assist in hospitals or work alongside the medical
profession.
